September 14 - 18

Don't forget CURRICULUM NIGHT on Tuesday, September 15th in the Library! 2nd grade Curriculum Night is from 5:30-6:15! The 2nd grade teachers will be there to tell you all about our year and answer any questions you may have! We look forward to seeing you there!

Also, Monday (September 14th) our spelling homework begins! Look for a note from your teacher for details on homework. We are excited for the learning to continue at home!

Here's what we're learning this week...

Reading: Readers make meaningful connections (text to self, text to text, text to world) with the books they read.

Writing: Writers read to learn and write to teach. We are starting our topic unit!

Math: Each part of a number has a place value. Ones can be added to make tens, tens can be added to make hundreds. When we compare numbers we use the terms greater than, less than and equal to.

Social Studies: We will continue to learn the traits of a good citizen! We will be discussing the following characteristics that all good citizens should possess respect, honesty, caring, and responsibility.

Science: The three different types of matter we will look at are solids, liquids and gases! We will also wrap up our unit on measurement.

Here's what we're learning this week:

Reading - Readers notice when they are not understanding what they have read,  and they use fix-up strategies to clear up any confusion.

Writing - Writers apply all they know about good grammar and spelling to their writing.

Math - We are learning about numbers to the 1,000's and place value!

Science - Students will be experimenting in measurement using standard and nonstandard units. We will also be exploring matter and the phases of liquids, solids and gases!

April 20 - 24

Sorry for the week hiatus! We are back on the blog!

First - Hunters Creek just got a new math subscription called “Mangahigh Math”. It’s an awesome website where there are fun math games as well as games that we can assign for our kiddos. It lets the teachers assign “challenges” to the kids where they play games to practice their math and it lets us see their progress and assign games with more rigor as they advance through the program. We wanted to let you know that it is available to use at home and throughout the summer as well! Your kids can work on the challenges we assign them (IF YOU want them to) or they can play around on the math games. Everything on Mangahigh is math education and the kids are finding it very fun and exciting!

With that being said, here is how they log-on (and they already know this, but just so you’re informed as well..

Their username is their computer username at HCE (they know these – email your teacher if you have questions).
Their password is their lunch #.
    The School ID is 42383.

Mangahigh is AWESOME and the kiddos are loving it!

Also - you should be receiving a Field Trip form today in your child's green folder! We are going to the zoo on May 4th! Please sign and return this to your child's teacher ASAP!

Check out what we are learning this week..

Writing - We are learning about sensory details and colors! Students will write their own poems about a color that they choose. We will also write Earth Day poems!

Reading - We will learn to gather evidence from resources, use text features to locate information, and record basic information in visual formats!

Math - We will finish up our unit on time and move on to picture graphs.

Science - We will continue our study of birds and their characteristics. This week we are looking at their beaks and feet to see how the different types of each affect their diet and movement!

Social Studies - We will look at the choices people make in the USA free enterprise including earning and spending, needs and wants, goods and services, consumers and producers!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
